THE QUADRANGLE -- FORT SAM HOUSTON
San Antonio is known as the "mother-in-law of the Army," and Fort Sam is part of the reason why. There is a lot of history in this quadrangle... It was the first U.S. fort built in San Antonio in 1879 and held Geronimo and his tribe prisoner in 1886. The "Rough Riders" were organized from this fort (and a bar in downtown San Antonio) and in 1910, the first military aircraft, built by the Wright Brothers, was flown to a height of 150 feet over the parade ground. In 1915 the entire U.S. Air Corps was stationed here... all six planes! In 1927, the silent World War II feature WINGS was shot here. It went on to win the first-ever Academy Award for Best Picture, which was, incidentally, presented at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, a location seen in STILL BREATHING.
