JUNE 7, 1996

Word has obviously got around to the local kids that a movie, with stars like Brendan Fraser, is being made here in San Antonio. What started as a couple of young girls sitting on the pavement waiting to catch a glimpse of a star has now, by word of mouth, increased to about 12 kids. My job at the moment is to keep the peace and quiet out on the street while filming takes place. I've been having a bit of a yarn with the kids and they don't seem to be causing any trouble. One young girl has obviously got a distorted idea of what a star is because she asked this PA if she could get a picture taken with me. One of those photos that when she gets a little older she'll ask herself, "Why did I get my photo taken with that guy?"

Eventually the kids get asked to move to the end of the street, much to their disappointment. I got the first two girls to write in my diary.

At both ends of the street are local police officers. One guy named Buzz was a real friendly man and we got on real well. He had a good sense of humor... He gave me a cap with the police emblem on it for a souvenir.

It's 7:10 pm. Twelve hours on set and I think I'm actually used to the long days. My favourite time of day is when the sun has just set. The road is still giving off warmth from the heat of the day and a late afternoon breeze blows, cooling the sweat on a grips back. Sort of reminds me of summer afternoons in Australia. The smell of cut grass, after dad had mowed the lawn, and us kids in the street playing a game of cricket until the game was called off because of bad light. The crew seem to relax at this time of day as well.
